work made exploring the juxtaposition of understood and functional brass resonance with the existent resonant frequencies of unplayed instruments to sonify and harmonize latent acoustic worlds.

Phantom brass are created using the sonified room tones of the trombone. This sonification process draws inspiration from Danish sound artist Jacob Kirkegaard’s work, Four Rooms, and Alvin Lucier’s seminal work, I am Sitting in a Room, by recording the inside of an unplayed and silent instrument. Then that recorded silence is played back inside of the instrument while the inside of the instrument is recorded again. This process is repeated until the latent “room tones” of brass instruments become audible, creating an extremely different world of pitch and timbre than when traditionally activated by a player’s lips. This work was made to juxtapose our understanding of brass's functional  acoustics with its inherent resonances.
